Gin Sour

The Sour cocktails can be viewed as a family of drinks that mix a base spirit with citrus and sugar. Daiquiris, Margaritas and Sidecars are all examples of Sour cocktails.

The Gin Sour was popular way back when cocktails were emerging from accidental pairings into written recipes. The origins of the Gin Sour are not recorded, but the drink bears a much resemblance to a Tom Collins (c.1874) with the soda missed out, a Gimlet (c.1867) with the lime cordial swapped for syrup, and a Pink Lady (1912) that adds grenadine. We can therefore assume that the Gin Sour was first mixed some time in the late 1800s, and is probably American in origin.

I am a huge fan of the Gin Sour. It is a masterpiece of flavour balance. Mixing one somehow connects me to the very origins of nifty bartending. I recommend you try one.
