The basic Daiquiri is said to have been invented by US miner Jennings Fox who was working in the Santiago de Cuba area in 1896. One evening, he ran out of gin, and starting mixing drinks with the local firewater. The drink made it into the bars of the US Navy via Admiral Lucius Johnson, and eventually to Washington high society.
The strawberry flavoured version of it was known the be popular in Cuba, but beyond that, there is no firm evidence that any one barman invented it.
Emmitsburg humourist Michael Hillman has written a ‘history‘ of the Strawberry Daiquiri involving some iffy rum and a strawberry patch, but I can’t verify a word of it. Hillman provides no contact details, and the story is not Cuban.
