Sex on the Beach

We are not going very far back in time to discover the origins of this tackily named drink. The Sex on the Beach is clearly a child of the Eighties. Orange and cranberry are mashed together with your basic potato-based spirit, and served long over ice to produce something that is actually quite nice. In fact, I would go as far as to say this is a better drink than the Singapore Sling, which is in a similar style (sweet, long, red and fruity). The problem is ordering it. I am glad I made this at home where I did not need to say its name out loud.

As to who invented it, there are a couple of theories:

  1. Confetti’s Bar. An bartender named Ted at Confetti’s, in a particularly shitty area of Panama City, Florida, invented the drink in 1987, right when peach schnapps first became available. It was named after the annual influx of Floridian tourists and the two activities they favoured while in the state.
  2. Fuzzy Navel. Someone combined a Fuzzy Navel and a Cape Codder around 1982.

The Sex on the Beach gained its popularity because it was picked up by TGI Friday’s. A quick scan of the current TGI Friday’s cocktail menu reveals that is has been dropped, but that the equally embarrassing Pornstar Martini has taken its place.

Confetti’s bar was at 501 W Highway 98, Panama City, Florida. It has now gone (flattened by a realignment of HW98), but there are reports that the nightclub was haunted.
